Abstract Data analytics is a rapidly growing field, aided by the availability of huge amounts of data and significant computing power. Automated decision making systems processing personal data make up a significant portion of the field. The initial excitement over the positive aspects of such systems is increasingly accompanied by misgivings about the threats they pose to privacy, fairness, and transparency of the process. The goal of this session is to bring together prominent researchers from fields of information theory, machine learning, and security to discuss open problems and the current research efforts to address them. Topics include privacy and algorithmic transparency and fairness.
